London (NBp) - The Spice Girls, one of Britain's biggest pop exports this
decade grabbed their "15 minutes of fame" with their hit-laden first
album, Spice. (Note: After adjustment for inflation, 15 minutes
of fame currently translates into roughly 1 year in the spotlight.)
Against all odds, they bargained for an additional 15 minutes of
fame by agreeing to ditch one member and make a movie to go along
with their second album, Spice World.
NBp insiders have learned that the Spice Girls have submitted an
application to the International Association of Famous People (IAFP)
for another 15 minutes. The IAFP determines who is famous by dictating
who can be on magazine covers and in TV news stories.
In order to meet the IAFP's requirements for fame, the Spice Girls
are planning a three pronged attack:
- Create an album with a radical new sound
- Lose two members through very public fights
- Add three members (Old Spice, Smelly Spice and Spicy Spice) and change the name to an unpronounceable symbol (a
cross between the female sign and an exclamation point)
Though it may be months before the IAFP officially rules on the future
of the Spice Girls, analysts believe the girls may run into trouble
because of the lack of originality.
"U2 and Madonna have gotten fame extensions by creating new sounds,"
explained Henry Jones Jr, noted music industry analyst. "Fights amongst
band members are certainly nothing new, and Prince went the unpronounceable
symbol route. Most people are lucky to get 15 minutes of fame... these girls
are asking for a total of 45 minutes! That's crazy."
The third Spice Girls album is tentatively titled Spice Girls World
and will be released regardless of whether or not they get a fame extension.
