Somewhere In Space (NBp) - UPS driver Eddie Green was
rather surprised when he looked at his route for the day.
Eddie had been delivering packages within New Jersey for 8
years, but yesterday's route had only one package. And that
package had a very unique destination.
|
| Eddie Green, using a specially modified
truck, drove to the International Space Station yesterday. |
"I was a bit puzzled at first, because I didn't know what 'ISS' was,"
explained Green. "My supervisor told me that it was the International
Space Station and that I'd better get moving if I was going to get
the package there on time."
UPS engineers set up a special tunnel and ramp system so that Green
could get his truck up to the 20,000 miles per hour speed necessary
to leave the atmosphere. Green expected the total trip to take under
8 hours, but brought an overnight bag just in case.
 |
| Green manually carried the package to the
ISS. |
Green's truck was not equipped with the complex docking mechanisms
necessary to connect directly to the ISS. Instead, he performed
a spacewalk to carry the package from his truck to the ISS. His package,
a carton of Fribozz Curry Puffs cereal, would have been difficult to
lift on Earth, but was easy to carry in the weightlessness of space.
Unfortunately, Green's mission for the day ended on a sour note.
There was no answer when he knocked on the airlock of the ISS. Green
left his customary yellow note on the door and dejectedly returned
to his truck, knowing that he would have to make that long journey
again the next day.
Green's re-entry into Earth's atmosphere went fine, though he was a
little off course and ended up landing on I-75 at 2:30am. Green's
take off for the second delivery attempt was scheduled for 8am this
morning.
